Could carrying a minor child in a motorcycle sidecar be considered reckless endangerment?
My ex son-in-law wants to travel on the interstate across 3 states with my 6 year-old grand child in the sidecar of his motorcycle. We are scared to death since the speed limit is 70 MPH or higher and the sidecare appears so vulnerable. Please help.
My grand daughter had this same argument with her in-laws.
My children, grandchildren, and now great grandchildren all grew up in sidecars. I would not hesitate to take a 6 year old across the country in one. The interstate is the safest place to ride. Agreed, the speeds are higher, but there is no cross traffic, no idiots coming at you and turning left in front of you, and usually no surprises. Add to this the fact that in a car, after a hundred miles, a driver is lulled into a half alert bored state and stays that way for another couple hundred miles until a gas stop. In a motorcycle, the air, the smells, and the unobstructed views tend to keep the driver much more alert as well as a 100 mile range between gas stops tends to cause the riders to be better rested and relaxed.
In nearly 50 years of riding, every motorcycle accident I've been involved in has taken place at speeds under 30mph and inside of city limits.
If you asked me if it's safe to take a child for a ride through town I might have to think more about it.
Insist that dad gets him a helmet and all the same safety wear that an adult would wear and give him your blessing. You won't regret it.

Do you need a motorcycle drivers license in Texas in order to operate a motorcycle with a sidecar?
The above defines "motorcycle."
License requirement is in http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/txmclaws.htm#chapter3 :
"A Class M driver's license authorizes the holder of the license to operate a motorcycle or moped."

In Texas you need a motorcycle license to drive a hack or tricycle. In California a regular car license is good enough.

"Sec. 521.030. RECIPROCAL LICENSE. (b) A nonresident who is 16 years of age or older and who has in the person's possession a driver's license issued to the person by the person's state or Canadian province of residence may operate a type of motor vehicle that is permitted to be operated with a Class C or Class M driver's license in this state if the license held by the nonresident permits operation of that type of vehicle in the person's state or province of residence."
Thus, a Californian Class C license permits the operation of a motorcycle-sidecar in California, and by reciprocal agreements is good to drive a motorcycle-sidecar in Texas.
