Regulation of Water and Kidney...?
Determine how each situation will affect kidney function. Describe the cause of the symptoms, and then describe how regulatory hormones counteract the imbalance created in each situation.
Case 1: Sports Player
A male, 16 years old, is playing soccer. He refuses to drink water during break times. The temperature is 30 degrees Celsius. After the game, he is extremely thirsty. When he attempts to urinate he can only manage a small volume, which is dark yellow in colour. (6 marks)
Case 2: Motorcycle Accident Victim
A middle-aged man is struck from the side while riding his motorcycle. His leg is severely injured, including a laceration of the femoral artery. He has lost approximately 2 litres of blood. When taken to the hospital, his urine output is zero, and he has very low blood pressure and a weak heart rate. Include how his body will restore blood volume.
Case 1: Sports Player
In this situation, he is depriving his body of fluids, which is very crucial to his health, especially when playing an intense sport like soccer that will make you sweat profusely. The body can only urinate a little because it lacks the electrolytes necessary to move the water from the tissues into the kidneys, where they can be excreted as urine. So, basically, the water is used throughout the body to try and compensate for the water lost through all the sweating and what not. Thus, the reason why he can only urinate only small amounts also. The urine is dark yellow in color because it's really concentrated with proteins and what not...that protein should have been in the kidneys where they would have attracted water. The laws of osmosis, solutes traveling from a lower gradient/concentrating to a higher gradient/concentration.
Case 2: Motorcycle Accident Victim
With blood comes lots of proteins, fluids, water, electrolytes, whatever you name, the bloods got it. Anyways, with that much blood loss, you can expect the kidneys to try and compensate for such fluid loss by activating renin, which activates the angiotensin II enzyme, activating angiotensin, and then in the end, aldosterone. The three As' main function are to put retention on the urinary system. In other words, the individual can't urinate. This mechanism is activated in hopes of increasing blood pressure again and keep the blood flowing at a homeostatic pace. The bodies only way to really restore the blood that is loss is by creating more RBCs via the kidney's secreting erythropoetin...the hormone that stimulates the creation of RBCs from the bone marrow. All fluids in the body will basically remain as they were and not move much until a normal body state function has been reached again. That's about it...in a more simple manner of explanation.

Is my Daniel Boone brand motorcycle jacket worth anything?
I have this jacket that has been sitting in my closet for a couple years....bought it at a garage sale. I am having a garage sale and wanted to get rid of it, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't passing on something that is actually worth some money. I have been searching and searching for the value of this thing, but can't find any information on it or the brand. Can anyone help me find some info on whether or not this jacket is worth something? From what I HAVE found, it looks to be at 50's style D-pocket Daniel Boone "trailblazer outerwear genuine steerhide" black leather motorcycle jacket. It has the zippers on the sleeves, and three rivets on the kidney protector strip. Any ideas?
